Lodging can be the most expensive part of a vacation. If you invest in luxury accommodations it gets even worse. Use some of the options below to help save money on lodging when you go on vacation.
- Search for hotel deals online
- Rent from a friend rather than a hotel
- Camp at a campground
- Travel in an RV
- Get lodging as part of an affordable package deal
Food
When you are at home you know how costly it can be to eat dinner out all the time. It could be even more expensive when you are on vacation. If you happen to vacation in a popular tourist area, assume that food is going to be even more expensive. Before you go, check for coupons and deals online. You can also visit small local places where the food is authentic, but the prices don’t carry tourist weight. You should also consider shopping at the local grocer and making some of your own meals where you are staying. This may not be feasible if you are renting a hotel room. However, if you are camping or renting a place from a friend, you can make your own meals.
Transportation
To get to your destination, browse sites for online deals. Sometimes you can get seats for a fraction of the price that you would if you didn’t browse. Do some cost comparisons as well. Is it cheaper to fly or drive? Should you rent a car or take your own? If you don’t have to rent a car, try using public transportation all the way. You can even take the bus or train to your vacation destination. If you are in an urban area, use the city buses to get you from one site to another.
Mystery Shopping
Before you make any arrangements at all, look into mystery shopping. Sometimes you can get paid to travel. You will almost definitely be able to find mystery shopping opportunities that reimburse you or pay you to dine out. Even if you only get reimbursed, you’re still saving a ton of cash while you are on vacation. Some companies even pay you to visit amusement parks and stores.
